Pune varsity replaces gown with traditional wear
PUNE: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has decided to replace the quintessential colonial convocation attire consisting of black robes and square caps with Indian traditional wear. The change will come into effect on January 11, the convocation day of the university. The dress code for both male and female students would be kurta, pyjama and uparna teamed with Puneri pagdi. When minister of state for human resource and development Satyapal Singh was at Bharati Vidyapeeth (deemed to be university) here in June last year, he had said that there was the need for a change and suggested that robes and hats be done away with as convocation dress.SPPU pro-vice-chancellor N S Umrani said that following the ministers suggestion, the varsity had been considering bringing about changes in its convocation dress code. "After discussion it was decided to change the dress code for the convocation scheduled this month."Academics have welcomed the sartorial makeover. Former SPPU vice-chancellor Vasudev Gade said, I think the idea of traditional attire for convocation is a welcome change.Until recently, donning overflowing robes, hats and scarves was de rigueur for guests and department heads at convocation , As Reported By TOI.
According to the Newspaper,Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) vice-chancellor Rajas Parchure said the universitys decision to give the graduation ceremony a traditional makeover was good as the guests on the podium always felt uncomfortable in robes.Students said that though they somehow managed the robes, they looked funny and strange on guests. The caps did not always fit the size of the guests, so everything was more of a fancy dress event than convocation. Dressing up traditional is a great idea, SPPU alumnus Rajeshwari Phadtare said.Another SPPU alumnus, Rajeshwari Phadtare, said the change would add colour to the ceremony. The idea of donning traditional wear during convocation had been gaining ground for some time.
