One of the last remaining uncivilized locations on earth is the North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal. The island is inhabited by the Sentinelese tribe who maintain very limited contact with the outside world. As per reports, anyone who has ever attempted to explore the island has been attacked or killed by the locals.
Last month, the Ministry of Home Affairs of India opened the island to tourists for the first time in history. It was previously under the Restricted Area Permit regime which restricted tourists from visiting the island.
Considering the life-threatening conditions on the island, the Indian government had previously established a 3-mile exclusion zone in an effort to stop the attacks and killings, reports ViralNova.
The decision to open the island to tourists was taken to boost tourism and overall development, reported Times of India.
However, the question remains if the island is fully safe or not.
As per reports, two fishermen were killed by the tribe in 2006 when their boat drifted on to the island. Although there was a rescue attempt by an Indian coastguard helicopter, it was prevented from landing by the tribesmen who reportedly shot arrows at the helicopter.
In 1981, when a ship reached the North Sentinel Island reef, a group of tribal men were seen carrying spears and arrows. The captain had immediately asked for a weapons drop so that the crew could defend itself during an attack. Luckily, the heavy waves kept the locals away from the ship long enough for a rescue.
The Sentinelese tribe is believed to be anything between 50-400 in number and they have been living on the island for more than 55,000 years (35,000 years before the ice age), reported Forbes
