Content warning: graphic violence against women

When female genital mutilation (FGM) is discussed, it is often viewed as a practice which only takes place in countries in Africa and the Middle East. The high number of women and girls affected in the UK is often ignored.

The first conviction in the UK took place on the first day of this month, highlighting the importance of the work of activists such as those involved in ‘The Pink Protest’ in ending this extremely harmful practice.

FGM is defined as “the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.” The reasons for carrying out FGM are often sociocultural and vary depending on location and time. Commonly, FGM is done to control a woman’s sexuality, for example, to preserve her virginity or to lower her libido. In many communities, it is seen as a rite of passage, part of the preparation process for marriage.

However, FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women in terms of health and physical integrity as well as freedom from inhumane and degrading treatment. The practice has no health benefits and can cause numerous physical and mental health problems, such as excessive blood loss, infections and PTSD.

Speaking to ELLE, ‘Sophia’, a Somalian survivor or FGM said, “they used a rope to tie me down so I couldn’t move. I couldn’t see much because there were a lot of women in the room – maybe eight or nine – but they had a blade which they used to cut me … every time I go to the toilet and every month, during my period, I feel pain … I get sick a lot and usually stay at home because I can’t move around easily.”

The custom is most prevalent in countries in Northern Africa and the Middle East, such as Somalia and Egypt. In Britain, FGM affects an estimated 137,000 girls and you women from immigrant communities.

Despite FGM being illegal in the UK since 1985, in addition to the 2003 Act that made it illegal to take anyone overseas to be cut, FGM continues to happen to young women and girls both in their countries of origin and here in the UK. Official figures show that over 6,000 women and girls had visited a public health service in England between April and March last year had undergone FGM – and 85 of these had taken place inside the country.

Legislation is an important part of ending FGM. Activist group ‘The Pink Protest’ have been campaigning to include FGM in the Children Act. This would mean that it would be easier for front line staff, such as social workers and teachers, to protect those children at risk. Members of the public can help to end FGM in the UK by taking a minute to sign the petition on Change.org to get FGM included in the Children Act. The tally of signatures currently stands at over 5,000.

However, legislation is only part of the solution. With training, staff who work with children can recognise the signs that a child has had FGM or is at risk of it. You can also educate yourself and others on what FGM is and its effects, by using resources such as ‘Petals’ and ‘Petals for Professionals’.

6 February marked the UN International Day of Zero Tolerance for female genital mutilation. The hashtag #EndFGM raised awareness of FGM through social media.

Editor’s Note: Since the writing of this article, a private member’s bill was proposed to Parliament which would have amended the 1989 Children Act to include FGM on the list of offences that courts can issue protection orders for, if a child is thought to be at risk.

On Friday 8 February, the bill was held to a debate during which the Conservative MP Sir Christopher Chope shouted “object”, essentially blocking the bill from progressing. He has since come under a barrage of criticism with Zac Goldsmith calling the decision “appalling” and Sajid Javid saying he was “very disappointed.”

Chope objects to the passage of private members’ bill as he believes they do not receive the appropriate amount of time for debate. With many other private members’ bills up for consideration, the bill is unlikely to become law any time soon, which is undoubtedly a problem.

Extinction Rebellion and Victoria Beckham: what to expect from London fashion week

hindi shayari

London fashion week, starting today, is shaping up to be the most eventful in recent years and it is not confined to the catwalk. On Sunday, the direct-action group Extinction Rebellion – which hit the headlines last year as they blocked five bridges over the Thames to protest against the government’s approach on climate change – intends to “swarm the streets calling on the industry to wake up to the climate and ecological crisis and use its influence to help to create a just and sustainable world”.

Its plan – for which it is encouraging attendees to “dress as though you are going to the most glamorous funeral” – is to disrupt the fashion event, rather than target specific shows. Clare Farrell, a lecturer in sustainable fashion and one of the founders of the group, told the Guardian: “The situation we are in, as a planet, is not the fault of London fashion week – but it is part of the problem”.

hindi shayari

A spokesperson for the British Fashion Council, which is to meet with the group to discuss the action, said that it endorses any group’s “right to protest peacefully”, adding that it is “committed to support businesses to do more and to develop through green growth. Our hope is that London fashion week becomes synonymous with responsible business in the years to come.”

Already the event has a heavy focus on sustainability. Mother of Pearl designer Amy Powney has partnered with BBC Earth to launch an awareness campaign over the weekend with the view to starting “a movement similar to that of Blue Planet II”, referring to the raised awareness of micro-plastics. As well as hosting a series of talks that will bring together BBC broadcasters and fashion industry experts to discuss how positive change can be made, the designer will also unveil a film made using footage shot by the BBC Natural History Unit. The short, which is narrated by the TV presenter Liz Bonnin (who is mooted to be David Attenborough’s successor), will look at ways the industry can stop harming the planet.

“The main message is simply to introduce to the nation that fashion is having an alarming impact on our planet and to promote positive solutions that we can all adopt,” says Powney, who is also launching a sustainable collection in collaboration with BBC Earth. “I am a firm believer that we can learn from everything we do and there is no point in dwelling on what’s happened but to come together now and use innovation to make changes for bettering ourselves and our industry.”

For a consecutive season, London fashion week is also fur-free. The BFC was able to confirm this after auditing the designers showing their collections on the official schedule this weekend. It currently does not prohibit the use of fur.

As far as actual fashion goes, the event has a renewed buzz thanks to Riccardo Tisci, who will be showing his second RTW collection for Burberry, and a returning Victoria Beckham, who has claimed a coveted Sunday-morning slot. The designer, who for the first decade of her brand showed her collections in New York, made her debut on home turf for her 10th anniversary show last September and says: “Right now, there’s nowhere else we’d rather be than here.”

“Returning to London to show my spring/summer 2019 collection as part of LFW for the first-time last season was incredible,” Beckham told the Guardian this week, adding that the new dynamics work well for her London-based design team, too. “The studio is based here, as is our flagship store, and I felt I wanted to continue to be a part of London fashion week.”

Other highlights on the schedule include Anya Hindmarch, who, after her Chubby Cloud immersion last season, is planning an indoor climbing frame installation called the Weave Project; the Fashion East collective, which welcomes CSM-graduate Gareth Wrighton; and sustainable pioneer Bethany Williams, who has been announced as the second recipient of the Queen’s Award, which will be given by the Duchess of Cornwall on Tuesday. Last year, the inaugural winner, Richard Quinn, was awarded by the Queen herself.

The five-day showcase will be the last major UK fashion platform before the country’s post-Brexit future is decided. In January, the BFC already gave its backing to the People’s Vote, saying: “A no deal situation will result in no transition period, and with an industry that is predominantly SMEs, we would struggle to cope with the trade realities that it would bring.” This week, CEO Caroline Rush reiterated that, “it is an important business that can’t be disregarded”, and releasied statistics gathered by the Mayor of London’s office that state that the fashion industry directly contributed £32.3bn to UK GDP in 2017 and, at 890,000 jobs, employs nearly as many people as the financial sector.

“There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding Brexit and in just over one month before our due date to leave the EU we still don’t know exactly what will happen,” said Rush. “Whatever the outcome of Brexit is, London needs to remain the global fashion capital, leading in creativity, technology and education. This is why we stand behind the mayor’s #LondonisOpen campaign and play our part to ensure that events such as LFW further highlight the importance of London remaining open to the world, to business, ideas, investment, trade and talent.”

So, in order to cater to the requirement of the tourists the authorities have decided to increase the visiting hours to the Statue of Unity by two hours – one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening.” (Image Credit Tarun Bhardwaj/Financialexpress.com)

The Gujarat government authorities including the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Ekta Trust and the Statue of Unity administration have decided to increase the visiting time to the world’s tallest statue by two hours. It has been done to accommodate the heavy rush of tourists visiting the site. Talking to the Financial Express Online, Jenu Devan, MD of Gujarat Tourism said, “Almost 10,000 tourists come on a daily basis to the Statue of Unity and on holidays and weekends the number may go up to 15,000 to 20,000. So, in order to cater to the requirement of the tourists the authorities have decided to increase the visiting hours to the Statue of Unity by two hours – one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening.”

The Statue of Unity will now open for tourists at 8am instead of earlier 9am and will remain open till 6pm instead of earlier 5pm. The viewing gallery situated at the chest height of this 182-meter-high Statue of Sardar Patel is the prime attraction for the tourists as they get a panoramic view of the Narmada Valley, lofty Satpura and Vindhya Mountains and the Sardar Sarovar dam situated 3.2 KM upstream from the Statue.

“Tourists want to take the lift to the chest level, all tourists wish to visit the viewing gallery and but only a certain number, approximately 5,000 can go up to the viewing gallery. Its number also depends on lifts’ carrying capacity and the time spent by the tourists at the chest level. So, the authorities have taken a stand that in order to cater to more tourists coming from far away places the time limit for visiting the Statue of Unity should be increased by two hours. That way it can accommodate more and more people on a daily basis,” Devan said.

Dewan also told Financial Express Online that this time slot will remain for the time being as the tourists demand is likely to increase due to the upcoming vacations season, so, in next few months it won’t change. “As of now visiting time stands to remain same but it all depends on the situation in the future,” Devan added.

Statue of Unity is witnessing huge rush of tourists and according to a reply filed by the Union Tourism Minister KJ Alphons over Eight lakh tourists have visited the place since its inauguration on 31st October till the end of January and the “revenue generated from visitors to Statue of Unity from November, 2018 to January, 2019 is Rs.19.47 crore.”

The history of blackface and why it is so offensive

Want to get more information about pokemon? Read this article now: The history of blackface and why it is so offensive

In recent months, a number of fashion brands, TV personalities and politicians have come under fire for blackface controversies.

From Gucci’s “balaclava knit” to Virginia governor Ralph Northam’s “offensive” yearbook, a string of race-related incidents has seen conversations surrounding the term grow.

Similarly, a recent study found that a third of people believe it is not wrong for a white person to wear makeup to appear black.

The poll, conducted by US think-tank Pew Research Center, revealed that 15 per cent of respondents said wearing blackface is acceptable for Halloween, while a further 19 per cent said it is “sometimes acceptable”.

So, what is blackface, when did it start and why is it so offensive?

Blackface dates back around 200 years and commonly refers to when someone – typically with white skin – paints their face darker to resemble a black person.

While the definition of blackface refers to painting one’s skin darker, there is actually much more to it that.

Blackface in the early 19th Century was a practice in which black people were mocked for the entertainment of white people, promoting negative stereotypes.

White actors, called minstrel performers, adorned their faces with coal-black makeup and outlandishly red lips, as well as wearing woolly wigs.

The first minstrel shows mimicked enslaved Africans on Southern plantations, depicting black people as lazy, ignorant, cowardly or hypersexual, according to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).

While the early minstrel shows started in New York, they quickly spread across the US.

New media ushered minstrel performances from the stage and into theatres with popular American actors, including Shirley Temple, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney donning blackface, making it a form of family amusement.

Dr Kehinde Andrews, an expert from Birmingham City University, explained blackface as being “very much about the fear of black people and the laughing at black people”.

“It is a really longstanding issue and negatively racial across Europe,” he told BBC Newsround.

“You see it from Shakespearean times onwards - this figure of white people 'blacking up'. It's either seen as a devil or a danger - or as a way to take the mickey out of people.”

Such performances promoted demeaning stereotypes of black people that helped confirm notions of superiority based on race.

“By distorting the features and culture of African Americans—including their looks, language, dance, deportment and character—white Americans were able to codify whiteness across class and geopolitical lines as its antithesis,” NMAAHC says.

In a 2012 article for The Huffington Post, David Leonard, chair of Washington State University’s department of critical culture, gender, and race studies, wrote: “Blackface is part of a history of dehumanisation, of denied citizenship, and of efforts to excuse and justify state violence.

In 2018, lawyer Chinyere Ezie spotted figurines in the Prada shop window in Soho, New York that bore a resemblance to racist depictions of black people (Chinyere Ezie / Facebook)

“From lynchings to mass incarceration, whites have utilised blackface (and the resulting dehumanisation) as part of its moral and legal justification for violence.”

While many who take part in blackface may not consider themselves racist, Leonard goes on to explain that this doesn’t change the impact it has on society.

“In many ways, one’s intent is irrelevant,” he told Vox.

“The harm, whether it’s harm in terms of eliciting anger, or sadness, or triggering various emotions or causing [black people to feel] both hyper-visible and invisible at the same time, is there.”

While minstrel shows may not happen anymore, blackface still appears in countless ways.

In recent months, there have been a number of instances of fashion brands insulting the black community with offensive clothing.

Last week, Gucci stopped selling a “balaclava knit” that featured a cut-out at the mouth and red lips after it was condemned by people on social media.

Then, just days later, a pair of shoes from Katy Perry’s eponymous fashion line were removed amid similar concerns.

Most recently, footage of British television presenters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnellydressed as Jamaican women also resurfaced, in which they can be heard speaking with an exaggerated accent.

In 2018, supermodel Gigi Hadid faced criticism and issued a public apology after a Vogue Italia cover showed her to be so heavily bronzed with makeup that many people felt it was blackface.
